September Volunteering

Do you want the chance to help out in Korea? ICI-Volunteers is looking for new foreign volunteers that want to volunteer with us.

If you have some spare time during the week or on weekends and want that good feeling that comes with volunteering then come along to our meeting on Tuesday the 14th of September at 6pm.

We will tell you more about how you can volunteer and will include the chance to
make Chuseok's famous rice cake-Songpyeon. We will also learn some basic Korean history.

Our office is near Changdeok Palace. You can call our office any time or simply visit our blog for the latest information and how to get here.

Volunteering involves speaking English and helping Korean students at various cultural sites around Seoul-so you get the chance to learn more about Korea while you help

**In addition to our regular weekly Sunday volunteering we will also be having a fantastic festival at Amsa-dong Prehistoric Settlement Site which you are welcome to come and help out. Remember to contact us as soon as possible so we can give you that chance**
-The dates are as follows; 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, and the festival will be October 9th and 10th -

Successful Palace Tour

Hi everyone, as you know the past fortnight we have had some special tours for ICI.  The first one being held by our interns for our ICI Members.  This was held at Deoksu Palace, on this day the weather was surprisingly clear.

The interns, who, at that time, were almost finished their internship, did a great job of showing everyone around, even though some members unfortunately couldn't make it.

We also had some special volunteer tours at Deoksu Palace and Changgyeong Palace. I personally had Mariestory classes on those days, but I heard that the classes went excellently, here is a message that I received from one of the people that were lucky enough to go along

"Dear Logan and ICI,
First and foremost, I would like to thank ICI, Logan and two very nice tour guiders for two tours all of you arranged for me and two Indonesian friends. Actually, I have to say that we could not expect that the tours was run very well and two tour guiders helped us a lot to understand about not only Korean history but also Korean culture. We just only thought that there were someone would take us visiting around two palaces and talked bla bla bla. In contrast, your logistic activities and liaison were done very well and two tour guiders could speak English fluently and answered every questions we posed. We have to say that we felt we were going with our__amily members and professional tour guiders, not volunteers at all.

To be honest, I am sure that I will continue to beg for your assistance for some future tours and would you please to update tour information for me. Please send me any news you plan to carry out in the future. It's my great honor and pleasure to know your tour activities.

Once again, thank you very much for your all and I do look forward to hearing from you soon.

With my best regards,
                                 Thang"

Thanks to those 해설사 for doing such a great job. I have uploaded some photos here for everyone to see, please feel free to click on them and download/see a larger version. Logan

Learn about Palaces with Korean Docente

So the time is again here: the summer time! Which means hot, rainy weather, and of course... Free tours with our Korean youth volunteers.

If anyone wants to come along and enjoy a free tour, learn about a Korean palace or two with some Korean kids, then check this out :)

We will be having free tours (entrance fee is 1,000 Won) of both Changgyeonggung (palace) and Deoksugung (palace) on the 14th and 21st of August (sat) the tours will go for around 2 hours and start at 10am and 2:30pm. The meeting place will be the ticket office 10mins before the start.

These students are basically Korean students; elementary grade 5/6-Middle school that study both Korean history and English. They volunteer at many places, including Seodaemun Prison and Amsa Prehistoric Settlement Site, they wish to spend time with people from different countries and practice explaining about their culture and history.

Please send an email to ici@icworld.or.kr and let us know that you will be there so we aren't overbooked again. See you then.

Volunteers

Hi guys and gals... as you may or may not know, we had our international youth festival just last month. I am so happy that even though at times it was hectic it ran smoothly-for the youth that is, maybe not for us...

We had 21 volunteers who came and volunteered, our thank you dinner will be held this Friday (6th of August)

For those of you that are visiting this blog page for the first time, hello and welcome. Our organisation is basically an non-profit organisation that specialises in cultural exchange and more specifically promoting Korea.

We have meetings once a month in which you can learn about korea and take part in a cultural activity such as: trying on hanbok, making buchimgae,, traditional tea (dado) ceremony, and learn about some Korean history.

Our volunteers volunteer at different places such as Amsa-dong prehistoric settlement site, Seodaemun Museum of natural history and so forth as often as they like, so give us a call, or shoot us an email and let us know that you are coming, Logan :)

JULY 14 MEETING

Welcome to all of our new ICI-volunteers, it is great of you to have come and checked us out on this blog.

To answer some of your questions, we are a non-profit organisation that provides free tours to both overseas visitors and Korean youth (and sometimes adults, too) at a variety of places, the place that we most often volunteer at is Amsa-Dong prehistoric settlement site. We also offer volunteering opportunities at Seodaeumun Prison and some different palaces around Seoul.

We aren't all just about volunteering, we have meetings once a month to learn something about Korea and Korea's history and culture, as well as do some traditional experience, for example this month we will be learning about Korean etiquette and trying on a variety of Joseon Era clothing.

If you want to come, we will be meeting at 6pm at our office (Hanok) you can see the map on the next page, if you are interested in coming, send me an email ici@iciworld.or.kr and I will send you an application form, I look forward to meeting everyone, Logan. ICI-Volunteers.

Meeting on Wednesday the 9th...

On Wednesday we had a fun meeting at our new hanok, which has been tentatively named "별하당" which translates into dream like a star in the sky. Because of examinations and this being the end of the semester for many of our volunteers just our core group of guys and gals came.

Unlike usual, we didn't do any advertising for new people except for some leaflets at Sogang, luckily that was sufficient, as we had two new people come along, Estafania from Ecuador, and Quintilio from the US, both via Princeton.

We had a late start thanks to one of our fantastic student guides being filmed for "생방송투데이" Which turned out great this morning on KBS.

We also had 2 excellent guests whom we found around Unhyeon Palace, John from the US, and Jessica from Australia. These two lucky guests, along with our new and old volunteers learnt about the meaning of Hangeul, how to make a traditional Korean Ink print, as well as, enjoyed eating some delicious hamburgers, at Farmer's Barn.

Overall, we had a great time, next month's meeting does not have a date set yet, but we will let everyone know soon.

Remember to join this blog to stay up to date.

This month we will be having our volunteers at Amsa-dong, Maryam will be helping out tomorrow, and the 3rd and 4th weekends may still be open.

Finally, next month we still need 2-3 volunteers to help out at the 10th Yeosu International Youth Camp. we will be providing you with transportation to Yeosu, Accommodation and food, sounds to good to be true? Well it's not, this camp is going to be awesome, check out the blog for the camp, Logan :)
